Old, and after a GREAT life.
He was one of New Zealands first art potters, making uniquely local work for the first time.
He stayed original and vibrant throughout his career.
We were big fans of his work.
He was named a 'New Zealand Living Icon' (akin to the National Living Treasure system in Japan)
in 2003, the first potter to be honoured so.

Such amazing pieces of art.
ReplyDeleteCan't see the dust.
ReplyDeleteHow lovely that you have some of his work, it's beautiful.
those are some beautiful pieces. it always saddens me when artists die. the world is lesser to me because there is just that much less creativity in it. it always feels like the end of an era.
ReplyDeleteWhy was that not bigger news? I remember raving to a friend about the wonder of the work of Toss Woollaston only to be told he had died a few months earlier. Where is our artist's national mourning day and general public announcement system?
