Claud and I will be putting up the tree and the deco's today; and she's already opened the first drawer in her first advent calender-awwww! I made it earlier in the year, if I remember correctly from an idea originally in that not usually a stylish craft mag, NZ womens weekly! My version, by virtue of me being a northern hemisphere-er down south, with christmas at midsummer still feeling not quite right even after a decade, had to be both white and feature snowflakes (like most of my favourite christmas decos). Matchboxes (approx two years of firelighting supply!), double sided sticky tape and stamping-hinting at my Blue Peter craft origins! And that bloomin Martha Stewart snowflake punch again!
I was always mad about the advent calender as a kid myself, though I was fussy and turned my nose up at cheap tasteless chocolate, my preference was for glitter and cute pictures. Always shared with my younger sister Miranda, it was always a good day when it was my turn to open the little door! Making my kid an advent calender is a christmas tradition I've started this year. I'm already thinking of next years-Christmas doll house, with miniture doll-house-y stuff gifts, of course, or perhaps this retro inspired number.
It was good to start early with this calender as it's taken me most of the rest of the year to find things both cool and very very little to put in each match box. Making it also extended last Christmas into January which is no bad thing in my book!

Wahoo! Our tree is in the process of going up too! Go the advent! x
ReplyDeleteLove it! That is really cool my goal for next year is to get my handmade advent calendar finished. I also agree a winter Christmas feels so 'right'. Was SO tempted to join your pay it forward especially with your awesome op-shopping and crafting abilities - if you run out of people I'm keen!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't do it - Summer Christmas blows my little mind! Cute advent calendar, we have a wooden one which the boys take turns to open. Speaking of which I must put some smarties in it - it's still Nov 30th here!
ReplyDelete(Everyone is very taken with the house you sent me over at mine)
that is very cute! i love the idea of finding 25 tiny little gifts. so fun!
ReplyDeleteGuess what I'm starting in January! There is just too much to do at this time of year, so I've decided that I'll start early next year.
ReplyDeleteLove the matchboxes!
Love it! You are so inspiring. Will be posting my christmas wreath tomorrow I hope.
ReplyDeleteVery cute! love the little hair barrettes, so cute :-)
ReplyDeleteWow! What a top mum you are :)
ReplyDeleteI love this Max! You have inspired me, and I am currently searching ebay for bulk matchboxes!
ReplyDeleteI love it! I love the numbering - did you do that by hand? Good old Martha Stewart - I have a few of her punches which get a hammering at this time of year.
ReplyDeleteI find the opposite to you with Christmas, I was bought up in NZ, summer Christmasses and now I live in Switzerland and it's snowy. I do enjoy it, but I guess whatever you're used to is what feels right. I kind of miss the sitting out on the deck watching the kids play and the BBQ sizzle away kind of Christmas.
Merry Summer Christmas to you and yours :) x
