Just in the nick of time, I found some wool blankets for my american braided rug course on Monday. From the Salvo's who have had a demolished-due-to-the-earthquake hotels-worth of blankets donated. Not super-cheap but absolutely immaculate, really good thick quality, and in an array of colours (though I'm still desperate for a pale grey one, the one in the pile here is more of an army green/dark grey).
Whilst I was there there, tired, kid wrangling, grinding my teeth, there were two young guys theatrically wrapping themselves up in the blankets laughing. One of them was very good looking, tall and tanned. it cheered me up watching them. My brain invented a winter-toga party to explain the lunchtime enthusiasm for blankets (they didn't look the rug weaving type). Until they were charged the special price of 50c each. The homeless price.
Another good reason to love the salvo's.

Always good to get a reminder of the true dual purpose of charity/op shops - raising money for charity and providing a cheap source of goods for those really in need, not just us thrifty types.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see what you create, and am sure you'll track down the right grey soon.
Have a lovely weekend x

It is. but i was relieved that there were loads and loads of blanket cause I dont think i could have taken any otherwise, and i sort of 'really' needed them!
DeleteThat's thoughtful observation right there, Max.
ReplyDeleteYour blankets look great, looking forward to the end results of your project. xxx
thanks mate, hopefully i can do those fine blankets justice! x
DeleteGot to love blankets, i always pick them up on my travels. Yours are blooming lovely. It is also refreshing to see the charity side of charity shopping (after all the shops here have gone all highstreet and commercial!). Scarlett x
ReplyDeleteYes it's hard to imagine some of those upmarket places in the uk practicing charity in the front door as well as the back x
DeleteOh. That (really) makes me stop and think about how lucky I am.
ReplyDeleteI know. We are.
Deletewonderful colours, your rug will look amazing. Hope you find all the colours you'd like.
ReplyDeleteThank you. If it looks half as good as your rug I'll be very, very happy x
DeleteI cant wait to see this rug. Keep us posted! I love those soft colours, really cozy looking. X Roberta
ReplyDeleteDont worry re keeping you posted, remember I did 15 posts on the doll house?!! You'll be begging me to stop soon!
DeleteAre they scratchy? I love these sorts of blankets but I am so particular about scratchiness. That sounds so wrong - I bet those boys didn't get to wonder that. x
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, some of them are, but could be handy for foot scratching/exfoliating in rug form!
DeleteLovely, hope you share the project when it's done. Thanks for commenting on my blog! My husband and I lived in Nelson, NZ for a year in 1999...will enjoy reading your blog. ~ Jenny
ReplyDeleteHi Jenny, what luck, nelson is heaven x
DeleteWell found! The only such blankets I have are in beige and a lurid yellow - know what you mean about grey though, there's something about getting the right grey (my favourite ever shade).
ReplyDeleteGood to remind us that charity is just that. Can't wait to see your blanket mash-up project results.
I'm thinking the lurid yellow sounds good! it's hard to get brightly coloured blankets here, they're all very subdued tones, unless you like orange, which i dont, bleurg!
DeleteWhat fun creations you have on your blog. You've chosen some beautiful colours here, and I look forward to seeing what you create with them.
ReplyDeleteI see you come from Yorkshire - that's where my grandparents come from, and I've had some happy times exploring Yorkshire and family connections.
