Fantastic Fabric Find. Op-Shop Show-Off April 2nd, 2013

Tim Main is a fantastic new zealand artist. he was, and still may be based in christchurch as i remember doing a studio visit some years ago, and deliberating over buying one of his screen printed harekeke fabric wall hangings. i didn't buy one in the end, can't remember why, but i do recall really liking the modern-day-new-zealand-william-morris look of them.
rifling through a box of hideous chintz, in case of cool chintz at the auctions in Kaiapoi recently i had a heart-stop op-shop moment. four Tim Main wall hangings!!! i must have looked a little excited as an old bloke leaned over and asked what i'd found. i hastily shoved a hideous chintz in his face and said "look at these, they'll be perfect for covering my dog's bean bag". he turned up his nose and turned away, and clearly my blatant lie (dog? beanbag? sewing? me?) worked a charm as i got the box for $2. yes, that's 50c each folks! that's $139.50 off the retail price of each at the wonderful store store bolt of cloth.

ideally what i'd like to do with them, or at least a pair of them is hang them in lieu of a bed head board, like these images from my pinterest account, though i can't see the husband agreeing to ditching our cool bed head any time soon... what do you think? what would you do with them?

    1. yes, i think that is the best way to use them, they are just too beautiful to cut up for cushions. i might experiment with them in my hall, but it's wood panelled and might be a tad too dark...

  5. What would I do with these amazing pieces of fabric? Why, I wood cover my dog's bean bag bed, of course! (Just kidding, but that line made laugh!). I think I would frame them and hang them in a row since they are so compatible with each other. Very amazing find.

  6. Thanks so much for stopping by.
I can't tell you how much I LOVE that Tim Main fabric find - I am so jealous. It's like an art piece - would you think of framing it? I used to be a real thrift shopper (yes in the eighties I was one of those millions of Wellos students in puffball skirts and an old man's black jacket with white tux - bit stained - shirt) and have to return my roots soonest. Your present behind the bed screen is way too cool to replace, love the pinks and the reds with it against the green (what kind of green is that?)

    1. you crack me up!
this puts me in mind of a story i've heard about a new zealand potter who was very much into the japanese 'unknown craftsman' thing (you don't sign your work/hero worship anyone etc) who apparently used a shoji hamada (world famous potter, megabucks) bowl to feed her cat!

  15. I think you should frame them in that floating style with a bigger border of that white / cream colour that's around each of them, that way they won't look dark in your hallway : ) What a cool find, makes me want to go op shopping tomorrow!
