Is the Rangiora salvos not the finest op-shop in the land!
Overall though, my op-shopping list tends to consists of the following categories of want:-
1. things i need to buy in the immediate future and would rather buy greener/cheaper. Case in point this week is tea light holders (the earthquakes have rendered my proper candle sticks dangerous to use) and we have a candle lit dinner every evening in winter for fun. So pretty, and it keeps the candle-charmed Claud's fingers out of harms way.
2. Also on my list are specific things of vintage origin i covet. Such as an old school satchel. Totally up my preppy boy fashion alley wahoo!
3. I'm also always on the lookout for craft materials; so i was chuffed to happen upon this linocutting tool, with all the different blades still in the box, perfect for my forays into print making
4. I am always on the look out for 'future presents' since my husband and some friends tastes run to vintage, and off course bloggy swaps. But i cannot ruin the surprise and show you right now...
5. But list or no, the best of all finds are the 'i didn't know i wanted it until i found it' finds. My 70's, fits like a glove, liberty print smock shirt being a case in point.
The thing thats been on my list longest is a 70's black tooled leather handbag of non-tiny dimensions. One day, one day...
Whats been on your list longest? (perhaps i can pull a number 4 and find one for you?).

Bonus on the liberty print smock fitting. I find it strange that everyone is rushing out to get their mitts in new prints when there must be a million liberty items left out there from the 80's and 90's.
ReplyDeleteAs for the speedball, I still bear the scars from primary school linocuts. Use with care, and of course imagination.
I agree, I;ve found several 80's liberty prints, but they're always ginormous, we liked blouses bollowy back then didn't we!
DeleteAh that satchel is beautiful! Top of my op-shop list at the moment is a child sized wooden rolling pin. I'm sure there's more but that's all I can think of at the mo.
ReplyDeleteI'll keep my eyes peeled...
DeleteWow op shop giving away eggs!!! That's awesome!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I have a list or a few covets... but I LOVE finding the random stuff I didn't know I wanted!
It's not often that I don't find the things I need, eventually. It's miraculous!
It is miraculous, and that part of what makes it so much more fun than grocery shopping!
DeleteExcellent idea with the tea lights & candle lit dinners! What a find the satchel wahoo & it looks to be in great nic too. I make an olive oil & beeswax mix that does a good job on just such an item. There is something on my list but you know it slips my mind just this minute. Rangiora salvos is grand alright double yokers & all!! We just get wrinkly oranges & rhubarb oh & quinces. Much love Catherine x
ReplyDeleteOoh, I have olive oil and bees wax, must have a bash, thanks for the tip x
DeleteYou really are amazing. I need to start a list because I have heaps of things but when asked I forget! My N0.1 would be a copy of the book 'Phoebe and the Hot Water Bottles' it's out of print now
ReplyDeleteI'm not likely to forget, or overlook that book title should i see it!
DeleteOh my, the satchel pulls my heart strings. Did you really op that? Still my beating heart.....As for the list how long do you want it. Love your new liberty tunic. Xxxx
ReplyDeleteI know!!! I'v be actually seen 3 lately, but they were all in the $20-40 range, this however came in under the $10 mark I'd set! I want to see your list@! Mine is long too heh! I'll show you mine if you show me yours!
DeleteI love the satchel too. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to decide if it would be sacrilige to pimp it up a bit...I have some leather paints...hmmm...
DeleteLove the leather bag!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cathy, I must pop over to your blog, i haven't 'seen' you around for ages x
DeleteAnother lovely post. I was only thinking about 'things you didn't know you wanted until you found them' the other day. I bought two plates along with a pile of other things, they had a green rim that i liked, but they were oval - very odd. Why oval plates? What are oval plates supposed to be used for? There are only two plates and there are three of us. There has been a bit of competition over who gets the oval plate. The size is right, and whatever you put on them just seems to fit better. I did not know i NEEDED oval plates until i found them. Now i just need to find another. Tea light fab, tunic fab, too many projects to covet the lino cutter but i see where you're coming from. Satchel - amazing!! x
ReplyDeleteme and the bloke have been debating the 'why are oval plates better?' issue all day! I wouldn't say we've resolved it, but we think oval for fish? and i think they deal better will gravy, less leakage, not sure why, a gravy-ergonomic thing?!!!
DeleteThe tea light looks delightful, Liberty prints are always so pretty, and the satchel will get LOADS of use, I bet! Oh and I remember using those lino cutters at school.
ReplyDeleteSo you've done very well there, Max!
I long to find some wonderful original funky 60-70s frock, from Biba, or an Ossie Clark or Thea Porter, just lounging on a charity shop sale rail... Or a Caro-Nan or Enid Collins box bag. Yeah right, never going to happen! A big tapestry bag, but not an 80s one, would do nicely too. The hunt continues... xxxx
I like that you too have a long list, I do feel the magic wand works better when one is specific about one's wants. I once found a biba dress, (oxfam in Broomhill!!!). It was back in my size 6-8 days hence the reason it was still there. i wore it a lot (it was mustard and dark brown in that biba graphic, with poke your eyes out collars). And yet i don't know what I did with it to not have it anymore -crazy (not that I'd fit it anymore tho!) x
DeleteI may need to take a trip to Rangiora sometime soon :)
ReplyDeleteMy two local salvos are our of commission (Linwood and Woolston)
Congrats on your bargains!
Amy
Ooh you must, poor thing having to cope with salvo-less-ness!
Deletenice founds!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Nice blog!
DeleteMy best ever opshop find was a Prada handbag, a couple of seasons old but essentially brand new, at a Salvos in Singapore when we were there on holidays. It cost $28. It made me smile for about a month. :) I love your list, Max - mine usually runs to vintage or retro cookware!
ReplyDeleteGreat finds, I'd have grabbed any of them. And I concur with your categories of want entirely. My ideal finds would include a cocktail cabinet and related paraphernalia, always coats - leather, suede or fake fur - some perfectly worn tan leather cowboy boots (with brown legs to go with them please), any lovely vintage jewellery, Christmas decs etc etc.

Waaahhh!! The Liberty print smock is simply epic! What a find! That AND a satchel? The thrifting gods were clearly smiling on you! :-)
ReplyDeleteJem xXx
This post made me smile, as over the last few years I've been stripping things away and making donations to op shops. One of them was a lino-cutting set. Even though it's not the one you got, I like to think of the various things I've given, going into hands such as yours.
ReplyDeleteMy list hmmm probably white pumps, leather purses, and tons and tons of 80s bathing suits. Im a collector what can I say. Thank you for voting for me! It means so much. You can vote once a day till the 30th. Im still behind but I havent given up hope. Following you now.

I have a list too - for a long time I thought I was the only one, so it's nice to find a fellow thrifty lister!! My list has globes, tapestries, mirrors, and milk glass (a rarity in the UK)!
